Domestic abuse and violence FAQs

What is a non-molestation order?

A non-molestation order is a legal injunction that protects you from harassment, abuse or assault. Our domestic abuse solicitors can apply to the courts for this order to ensure your safety.

Can you sue for domestic violence in the UK?

Criminal action may be taken against your abuser in some cases. You can consider making a civil or criminal injuries claim, but you would need specialist advice to do so.

Do domestic abuse cases go to court?

Domestic abuse cases do go to court, but you are protected in court if you feel it necessary — screens or video links are often used.

How quickly can I get legal protection from domestic abuse?

Injunction proceedings can be issued swiftly, depending on the circumstances of your case. You can get several legal orders to protect you from domestic violence on an urgent basis if need be.

What if I'm financially dependent on my abuser?

In cases where the victim of abuse is financially dependent on the abusing party, we can advise you of the law and your rights. A victim cannot be expected to stay in a violent environment due to financial circumstances.

Will the police get involved in my domestic abuse case?

It may be that proceedings will be instituted by the police, including harassment proceedings, which will save you a great deal of time and cost. If you are experiencing domestic violence, you should call the police in the first instance.
