UK Immigration Law - Admission for Sports People

If you are a sports person and you have existing leave to enter or stay in the UK, you will be able to extend your leave if you meet the criteria but, you will now need a certificate of sponsorship.
 
Points assessment
You will need to score a pass mark of 70 points from the three sets of criteria. These are sponsorship, maintenance and English language skills.
 
Sponsorship
You will require a valid certificate of sponsorship by a sponsor for which you will score 50 points.

In order to obtain a certificate of sponsorship, you must :

  •  be qualified to do the job in question;
  •  intend to base yourself in the United Kingdom;
  •  have been approved by a governing body for the sport;
  •  comply with the conditions of your permission to stay and leave the United Kingdom when your leave expires.
  •  be internationally established at the highest level; and
  •  will make a significant contribution to the development of your sport at the highest level in the United Kingdom.
It is also paramount to show that it is appropriate to fill the post from outside the European Economic Area (EEA).
 
Maintenance
You must score 10 points in this category by showing that you are able to support yourself and any relatives you bring with you, while you are in the United Kingdom.
 
English language skills
You must score 10 points by showing that you are able to speak English to a basic standard. You will need to show that you are competent in the English language by:
  •  passing a test in English equivalent to the appropriate level;
  • coming from a majority English speaking country; or
  • having taken a degree taught in English (verified using national academic recognition information centre data).
